What it does

This Claude Code + Shopify workflow shows merchants how to stop writing product descriptions by hand. Using Shopify’s official AI Toolkit, Claude Code connects to your live store, researches keywords from what’s ranking on Google, and rewrites Shopify product titles, descriptions, and meta titles so each listing targets a real search phrase. From the same session you can add product metafields for LLM visibility, create SEO-friendly smart collections, and plan blog posts with internal links to help those pages get indexed.

How it works

  1. Connect Claude Code to Shopify

Install the Shopify AI Toolkit (shopify.dev/docs/apps/build/ai-toolkit) in Claude Code. It creates a bridge between your store and Claude — no custom Shopify app build required for basic product access.

  2. Authenticate your store

Claude walks you through connecting an existing store: enter your *.myshopify.com domain, approve product scopes, and install the toolkit connection in Admin.

  3. Audit live products

Ask Claude to list products. Ideal for fresh imports (including dropship catalogs) that still have thin or empty titles and descriptions.

  4. Keyword-aware SEO rewrite

Claude does basic keyword research (including SERP checks for phrases like your product type), then optimizes each product title, description, and meta title to rank for that keyword.

  5. Apply changes in Admin

Updates write back to Shopify. Refresh Admin and you’ll see new descriptions and titles landing on products that previously had almost none.

  6. Smart collections

Prompt Claude to group products into collections from titles or tags. It can create Shopify smart collections that auto-populate and can rank as their own landing pages.

What you need

  • Claude Code installed and running (terminal / Claude Desktop Code session)
  • Node.js 18+ on your machine
  • A Shopify store you can authenticate against
  • Shopify AI Toolkit (shopify.dev/docs/apps/build/ai-toolkit) — official plugin or skills install
  • Comfort with copy-paste in the terminal (Claude handles most of the commands)
  • Optional: OpenRouter or another API key if you want Claude to offload rewrites to a cheaper model to save Claude usage

Setup walkthrough

  1. Open a Claude Code project folder

In Claude Code, start a new session, choose Open folder → New folder (e.g. “example-shopify”), and open it. This gives Claude a workspace for any scripts or reports it generates while optimizing products.

  2. Install the Shopify AI Toolkit

Get the install instructions from Shopify’s AI Toolkit docs (shopify.dev/docs/apps/build/ai-toolkit) — or search “Shopify AI Toolkit”, open the official page, and copy the Markdown. Paste into Claude and ask it to install the toolkit. Recommended Claude Code path: install the official plugin so skills and Dev MCP stay up to date. Prefer user scope so it works across projects.

  3. Connect your existing store

Tell Claude: “Help me get this on my store.” When prompted, use Connect an existing store, paste your store domain (your-store.myshopify.com), and grant product scopes so Claude can read and update products. Approve the install in the browser — you no longer need to hand-build a custom Admin app for this bridge.

  4. Verify with a product list

Ask Claude to list the products on your store. Confirm you see the same catalog as Shopify Admin before you let it rewrite anything live.

  5. Run SEO optimization on products

Prompt something like: “Do basic keyword research, then optimize each product title and description so they rank on Google for their keyword.” Claude researches the SERP, drafts stronger titles and body copy, and updates meta titles. On larger catalogs, have it work product-by-product (semi-manual) for higher quality than a blind bulk pass.

  6. Add metafields for LLM discoverability (recommended)

Beyond classic SEO fields, add product metafields that help assistants like ChatGPT understand and recommend your products. Ask Claude to propose a metafield plan (attributes, use cases, FAQs) and write them back — treat this as part of modern product SEO, not an afterthought.

  7. Create smart collections with AI

After titles and tags are clean, prompt: “Put my products into collections based on title or tags.” Claude can create smart collections (e.g. park snowboards vs freestyle) that auto-include matching products and give you extra indexable category URLs.

Example workflow

  1. Install and authenticate

Paste the Shopify AI Toolkit install MD into Claude Code, finish store auth, and confirm “list my products” returns your catalog.

  2. Frame the catalog goal

Example: “Treat this like a dropship import. Research keywords and optimize titles plus descriptions so each product ranks for its main keyword.”

  3. Watch Admin update

Keep Shopify Admin open on Products. As Claude finishes each item, refresh to see new descriptions, titles, and meta titles appear.

  4. Collection pass

Ask Claude to create smart collections from the optimized titles/tags, then enable and preview those collection pages on the storefront.

  5. Content follow-through

Schedule blogs that link into those collections and products so Google has a path to discover and reinforce the pages you just optimized.

What you get

  • Product titles and descriptions rewritten for real search demand, not placeholder import text
  • Meta titles filled so listings look intentional in SERPs
  • Live write-back to Shopify without manually editing each product in Admin
  • Smart collections that auto-populate and can rank as category pages
  • A repeatable Claude Code session you can re-run when you import new products
  • A clear next step into blogs + internal linking for fuller SEO

Tips

  • Prefer semi-manual (one product or a small batch at a time) over dumping the whole catalog in one blind pass — quality jumps.
  • Always verify on a staging or example store first if you’re new to allowing Claude write access.
  • Official Toolkit install beats random GitHub forks — start from https://shopify.dev/docs/apps/build/ai-toolkit.
  • If Claude usage is expensive, ask Claude to build a small helper tool that calls a cheaper model (e.g. via OpenRouter) for bulk rewrite drafts, then review before applying.
  • Don’t skip metafields — they’re increasingly how products show up inside LLMs, not only classic Google SEO.
  • After product SEO, publish blogs with internal links to the products and collections you care about most.
